Old Time Fiddling

The traditional music of Canada is the old-time fiddle (with various accompaniments) drawing on a long heritage of Scottish, Irish, French, English and other violin music.

It is fun to play, whether you are a beginner or an experienced pro.

An internet search will turn up YouTube videos of current and former great fiddlers. A search for "Prairie Mountain Fiddlers" will get music, both sheet music and audio versions, of many fine traditional tunes that they play. And, a search for "ABC notation" will uncover information about that system and the relevant software, for access to a huge archive of traditional music.

Dancing

All the fiddle clubs have good dancing, but here are some places that specialize in traditional square dancing and round dancing:

  • Canadian Olde Tyme Square Dance Callers' Association.
They hold a big dance (square dancing, round dancing) twice a year.
  • Bill Hands' Traditional Square Dancing.
Meets various nights of the week, in various locations. Details
